People in the Bulgarian capital Sofia were hopeful that five Bulgarian nurses imprisoned in Libya would be set free, ahead of an expected announcement on Monday from Libya on their fate.
One man said “I hope they free them and they come back.”
The five Bulgarian nurses and a Palestinian doctor are in jail in Libya, accused of infecting 400 Libyan children with the AIDS virus.
The six were sentenced to death in the case, causing an international outcry, and Libyan officials have said a financial settlement could pave the way for the medics’ release.
Eastern European countries are processing a financial deal to compensate the families of the Libyan children infected with the AIDS virus.
One Sofia resident questioned the amount of money to be given to the families of the victims: “One million per family. I’m not sure a human life costs a million,” he said.
The remission of Libyan debt to Bulgaria, Slovakia and several other eastern European nations would provide for the compensation money.
Government officials from Bulgaria and other nations reportedly involved in the deal all denied they were sending cash to the families.
But the spokeswoman for Slovakia’s ruling party said Saturday that Prime Minister Robert Fico had discussed with Libyan officials in February the possibility of using some of the country’s debt to compensate the families.
Bulgarian Foreign Minister Ivailo Kalfin reiterated on Friday that Bulgaria would not pay compensations because that would imply the medics were guilty.
However, he also voiced optimism that a settlement was close that could result in the six medics being pardoned.
